Developed primarily to address basic lighting requirements for people who are not able to afford even kerosene lamps or candles, a solar charging station consists of 5 solar panels with capacities of 50 to 80 peak watts (Wp), and 50 LED solar lanterns which are simultaneously charged to provide lighting for 5 - 6 hours daily. The lanterns are rented out to households or small shops on a daily or monthly basis. The solar charging station generates a livelihood opportunity for men or women who function as village level entrepreneurs. Suitable for use indoors as well as outside, the solution brings flexibility to the end user, allowing them to take a lantern on hire only when required and paying only for what they use.
